Why does the article mention gravitational pull as the factor? It should be the speed at which the clocks move that's the factor, right? The higher you are the faster you move, like the outside edge of a record vs the inside edge.

Learn something new every day. I always thought speed was the determining factor - the faster you move the slower time is, but it's a ridiculously small difference until you're moving at near light speed. And naturally if you're closer to center of the earth you'll be moving slower than at high altitude.

Experimental confirmation

Gravitational time dilation has been experimentally measured using atomic clocks on airplanes. The clocks aboard the airplanes were slightly faster with respect to clocks on the ground. The effect is significant enough that the Global Positioning System's artificial satellites need to have their clocks corrected.[2]

Additionally, time dilations due to height differences of less than 1 meter have been experimentally verified in the laboratory.[3]

I swear it's because of speed differences, not gravity It's in an old physics textbook I have somewhere.

Hmm it seems both velocity and gravity have an effect. My old textbook is out of date.

It's from 1993 or 1994, and didn't get too much into the theory of relativity but enough.
